A hydro-distillation system has been used for extraction of volatile (essential oils) and nonvolatile (polyphenols and pectins) compounds using solar or conventional fossil energy. It was found that the essential oil quality and yield were similar; however, the extraction time was 36.8% higher for the conventional procedure.
Essential oil extraction by distillation method requires heat in the range of medium temperature which could be supplied by various methods such as biomass, LPG and solar thermal systems. Out of these popular methods used, the solar thermal system provides the extraction system more efficient and economical.
Through this study, steam requirement of 750 g/ml of Betel leaf volatile oil extracted and quantification of energy requirements for the extraction process is determined. For adoption of sustainable and clean energy source, opto-geometric optimisation and concentrating solar collectors (CSC) area calculation are carried out.
