On Feb 1 at 2:11 am, one of the turbine’s 11-story tall blades flew the full length of a football field and plowed a 4-feet deep furrow in a wheat field. The heavy-duty bolts that kept the blade attached to the tower scattered like shrapnel.
On Thursday, a large chunk of the blade separated from the turbine and tumbled into the water. Officials with Vineyard Wind and the turbine’s manufacturer GE Vernova are investigating how the 107-meter blade folded over, but the project’s been shut down indefinitely until federal regulators can figure out what went wrong.
The steel tower, which once stood hundreds of feet tall, was buckled in half, and the turbine blades, whose rotation took the machine higher than the Statue of Liberty, were splayed across the wheat field below. The turbine, made by General Electric Co., had been in operation less than a year.
The federal government is conducting its own investigation and has ordered Vineyard Wind to stop all its wind turbines producing electricity until it can be determined whether any other.
As the photovoltaic (PV) industry continues to evolve, advancements in Wind turbine blades fall into wheat field have become critical to optimizing the utilization of renewable energy sources. From innovative battery technologies to intelligent energy management systems, these solutions are transforming the way we store and distribute solar-generated electricity.
